Non-profits are not immune from lawsuits. Almost any day-to-day decision by anyone in a non-profit organization can trigger legal action. Such litigation not only can hurt the organization financially, but can also threaten the personal assets of the organization’s members, trustees and executives. Such organizations require special, enhanced programs, available at premiums that won’t break a non-profit’s budget.

What are Human Services & Social Services?

A Human Services Organization is broadly defined as an organization uniquely approaching the objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base. It focuses on prevention as well as remediation of problems. It maintains a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations. The Human Services profession is one which promotes improved service delivery systems by addressing not only the quality of direct services, but also by seeking to improve accessibility, accountability, and coordination among professionals and agencies in service delivery.

A Human services professional is a person who hold professional and paraprofessional jobs in such diverse settings as group homes and halfway houses; correctional, intellectual disability, and community mental health centers; family, child, and youth service agencies, and programs concerned with alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence, and aging. Depending on the employment setting and the kinds of clients served there, job titles and duties vary a great deal.

The primary purpose of the human services professional is to assist individual and communities to function as effectively as possible in the major domains of living.

A strong desire to help others is an important consideration for a job as a human services worker. Individuals who show patience, understanding, and caring in their dealings with others are highly valued by employers. Other important personal traits include communication skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to manage time effectively.

Professional General Liability Protection

The AFIG Professional Liability and General Liability insurance coverage provides legal defense and indemnity should your organization be sued by third parties for alleged or actual wrong-doing by employees, volunteers, or others who work on your behalf.

Human Service organizations should also consider protection against abuse and molestation. The Abuse and
Molestation Liability insurance offers protection with the flexibility to choose the exact limits and level of coverage you need.

Human Service agencies perform a variety professional services in connection with the services they offer. General Liability policies do not provide coverage for these professional exposures. The AFIG Human Services Insurance – Social Services Insurance program combines both the General & Professional Liability Coverage Forms. Our policy includes coverage for damages relating to wrongful acts arising from the performance or failure to perform professional services. Professional services include the vicarious liability for employed, contracted, or volunteer physicians or dentists.

Therapies & Treatments

Behavior Therapy:

Behavior therapy is a broad term referring to either psycho-, behavior analytical, or a combination of the two therapies. In its broadest sense, the methods focus on either just behaviors or in combination with thoughts and feelings that might be causing them. Those who practice behavior therapy tend to look more at specific, learned behaviors and how the environment has an impact on those behaviors. Those who practice behavior therapy are called behaviorists. They tend to look for treatment outcomes that are objectively measurable. Behavior therapy does not involve one specific method but it has a wide range of techniques that can be used to treat a person’s psychological problems. Behavior therapy breaks down into three disciplines: applied behavior analysis (ABA), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and social learning theory. ABA focuses on operant conditioning in the form of positive reinforcement to modify behavior after conducting a Functional behavior assessment (FBA) and CBT focuses on the thoughts and feelings behind mental health conditions with treatment plans in psychotherapy to lessen the issue.

CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:

CBT is a psycho therapeutic approach that addresses dysfunctional emotions, manipulative behaviors and cognitive processes and contents through a number of goal-oriented, explicit systematic procedures. The name refers to behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, and to therapy based upon a combination of basic behavioral and cognitive principles and research. Most therapists working with patients dealing with anxiety and depression use a blend of cognitive and behavioral therapy.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing):

EMDR is the primary trauma treatment in our Warrior Camp program. It was developed over 20 years ago and has been heavily studied and evaluated. It has been given an “A” rating, meaning “always appropriate and acceptable” by the VA and DoD, Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Post Traumatic Stress, 2010.

Hippotherapy:

A physical, occupational or speech therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement. The word hippotherapy derives from the Greek word hippos, meaning horse. The term hippotherapy refers to the use of the movement of the horse as a treatment strategy by physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech/language pathologists to address impairments, functional limitations and disabilities in patients with neuromotor and sensory dysfunction. This treatment strategy is used as part of an integrated treatment program to achieve functional goals.

Therapeutic Riding:

Therapeutic riding is an equine-assisted activity for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs.

YOGA:

Yoga is a practical aid, not a religion. Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. The continued practice of yoga will lead you to a sense of peace and well-being, and also a feeling of being at one with their environment. The practice of yoga makes the body strong and flexible, it also improves the functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems. Yoga brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy:

A collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working with the clients and horses to address treatment goals.  Because of its intensity and effectiveness, it is considered a short-term, or “brief” approach.
